Beaches and coves in the north of Mallorca

From Villa Son Bisho in Campanet, the nearest beach is about 20 minutes away by car. The bay of Alcúdia has the long sandy beaches with shallow water; towards Pollença and Formentor, and on the coast of Artà, you will find the wilder coves. Here are eleven, ordered by distance from the house.

Approximate driving times from Villa Son Bisho, according to Google Maps with typical traffic. Updated October 2026.

  1. Alcúdia beach

    • 20 min by car
    • Fine sand
    • All facilities
    • Great with children

Several kilometres of fine sand along the bay of Alcúdia, with clear water that stays shallow for a long way out. It has sunbeds, beach bars, lifeguards in season and water sports, plus a promenade with restaurants around Port d'Alcúdia.

Tip: The easiest choice if you are travelling with small children.

  2. Playa de Muro

    • 25 min by car
    • Fine sand
    • Dunes
    • Facilities

The continuation of Alcúdia beach: white sand, shallow turquoise water and a line of dunes with pine trees behind. Next to it is the s'Albufera Natural Park, the largest wetland in the Balearic Islands, with marked trails for birdwatching.

Tip: The stretches next to the dunes are the quietest.

  3. Cala Sant Vicenç

    • 30 min by car
    • Sand and rock
    • Facilities
    • Very clear water

A small resort near Pollença with several little coves, such as Cala Barques, Cala Clara and Cala Molins, beneath the Cavall Bernat, a rocky ridge that drops into the sea. The water is very clear and good for snorkelling.

Tip: In summer, arrive early: parking is limited.

  4. Son Serra de Marina

    • 35 min by car
    • Sand
    • Few facilities
    • Natural beach

A long, open beach with dunes and hardly any buildings, at the southern end of the bay of Alcúdia. On windy days it fills with windsurfers and kitesurfers; on calm days it is one of the quietest beaches in the bay.

Tip: If you want a beach without sunbeds or buildings, this is it.

  5. Platja des Coll Baix

    • 40 min by car
    • 30 to 45 min on foot
    • Pebbles and coarse sand
    • No facilities
    • On foot or by boat only

A wild cove on the Victòria peninsula near Alcúdia, enclosed by cliffs and pine woods. From the Coll Baix picnic area it takes 30 to 45 minutes on a track and then a steep path that ends among rocks. Crystal-clear water and few people.

Tip: There are no facilities at all: bring water, food and a bag for your rubbish. Not suitable for small children or people with reduced mobility.

  6. Formentor beach

    • 45 min by car
    • Sand
    • Pines to the shore
    • Calm water

On the bay of Pollença, with pine trees reaching almost to the water and views of the Formentor peninsula. Calm, clear water. In high season car access is limited: in 2026, from 15 May to 18 October between 10:00 and 22:00, you can only drive there if there is space in its car park, and the road on to the lighthouse is closed to private cars.

Tip: During those dates, take the shuttle bus (TIB line 334) from Port de Pollença or the boat from the harbour. Before 10:00 you can drive there without restrictions.

  7. Cala Agulla

    • 1 h by car
    • White sand
    • Facilities
    • Pine woods

Next to Cala Ratjada, on the north-eastern tip of the island: a wide cove with white sand, turquoise water and pine woods behind. It has facilities, and coastal paths lead from it to smaller coves.

Tip: Combine it with a stroll around Cala Ratjada or with nearby Cala Mesquida.

  8. Cala Mesquida

    • 1 h by car
    • Sand
    • Dunes
    • Open sea

A sandy beach backed by large dunes on the coast of Capdepera. It faces north, so some days there are waves; on calm days the water is a deep blue.

Tip: Check the flag before swimming.

  9. Cala Torta

    • 1 h by car
    • White sand
    • No facilities
    • Last stretch unpaved

An unspoilt cove in the Llevant Peninsula Natural Park near Artà: about 150 metres of fine white sand between rocks, with dunes in the middle. The last kilometre of the approach is a dirt track and the car park is small.

Tip: No bar and no bins: bring what you need and take your rubbish home. Best before 10:00 or in the afternoon.

  10. Sa Calobra

    • 1 h 25 by car
    • Pebbles
    • Mountain road
    • Restaurants

At the end of one of Mallorca's most spectacular roads, which descends from the mountains in tight hairpins and loops over itself at the Nus de sa Corbata. At the bottom there is a small cove and, along a path through tunnels cut in the rock, the mouth of the Torrent de Pareis between stone walls.

Tip: Go first thing or late in the afternoon, when the coaches have gone. In season you can also arrive by boat from Port de Sóller.

  11. Es Trenc

    • 1 h 05 by car
    • White sand
    • Natural beach
    • South of the island

The great unspoilt beach of southern Mallorca, in Campos: several kilometres of white sand and turquoise water in a protected natural area. It is further than the others, but the drive is mostly motorway and it is worth a whole day.

Tip: Bring a sunshade: there is little natural shade.

Making the most of the beaches

  • In July and August, small coves fill up early: arrive before 10:00 or after 17:00.
  • On the north coast the sea changes quickly when the wind blows from the north: always respect the flag.
  • Dry Posidonia seagrass on the shore is a sign of clean water and protects the sand from erosion: leave it where it is.
  • Bring water shoes for pebble or rocky coves.
